JUPITER HIGH JOINS NORTON MUSEUM’S SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
Digital photography students will tour special exhibitions, visit the Everglades, work with curators, and be featured in an exhibition
WEST PALM BEACH, FL (Oct. 20, 2014) – The Norton Museum of Art and Jupiter Community High School (JCHS) are pleased to announce the launch of an exciting, new School Partnership Program for the 2014-2015 academic year. This collaboration is in conjunction with the school’s AICE (Advanced International Certificate of Education) Digital Photography program introduced this year. AICE is a diploma program allowing students to take college-level courses in a particular academic discipline.
The partnership allows students to further enhance their photography studies by experiencing a variety of activities at the Norton and outside the classroom. Two field trips to the Norton are planned; the first in November for a tour of the special exhibitions, Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast, and The Rudin Prize for Emerging Photographers. Tim B. Wride, the Norton’s William and Sarah Ross Soter Curator of Photography, will be the featured speaker. A second tour is scheduled for the spring to view the exhibition, Imaging Eden: Photographers Discover the Everglades.
“The involvement of our A.I.C.E. Art and Design Digital Photography students with the Everglades photography project will be an enriching collaboration that will bring their experiences with art to new heights,” said Amber Saunders, A.I.C.E. Cambridge Program Coordinator. “With more than 300 students in our A.I.C.E. photography course, the creative and academic potential of this partnership is limitless.”
Jupiter High School digital photography instructor Stephen Germana adds that, “This partnership is an amazing educational opportunity that allows our students to witness world-renowned artists encountering the complex ecosystem of our home, and then view the results of that artistic inquiry in the Imaging Eden exhibition in March. It also will illuminate the working processes of the artists in a manner unattainable within the confines of the classroom alone. The students' opportunity to query the artists about their work and the complexity in presenting a museum exhibition is also invaluable.”
Partnership plans also include: a trip to a local, natural habitat where students can study the environment and take photographs; a Skype session with one of the featured photographers in the Imaging Eden exhibition; and an excursion to the Everglades for photography and environmental students to explore the relationship between their field of study, classroom curriculum, and Florida’s most important natural resource. The partnership also provides students with free admission to the Norton throughout the year, encouraging them to engage with all the Museum offers. A professional development session on arts-integrated education for JCHS teachers is also being offered by Glenn Tomlinson, William Randolph Hearst Curator of Education.
The program will culminate this spring with an exhibition of the students’ digital photography work in the Museum’s Marden Community Gallery. An opening reception with free admission for the Jupiter Community High School staff, student photographers, and their families will be held during the Norton’s popular Art After Dark and will include a performance by the JCHS jazz band.
The Norton Museum of Art currently maintains school partnership programs with Palm Beach Day Academy and Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach. Another new partnership program begins this fall with The Mandel Jewish Community Center in Palm Beach Gardens.
